WASHINGTON WAS CORRECT ABOUT POLITICAL PARTIES

"However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion."

News headlines, conversations, votes, nominations, and on and on are no longer about what is best for the country, but what is best for the party. Statesmen ponder the best course for the country, politicians ponder what is the best course for the party. When considering the best move for the country the statesman understands that his power and his quest for wealth are a distant consideration. When considering the best course for the party, the politician understands that his quest for power and his quest for wealth are the primary consideration. The good of the country is used as an excuse for the action but is not a consideration.
I challenge any who reads this to ponder it. Look at what Washington stated and then apply it to the United States today. Yes, it is safe to say that one of the parties today has politicians, but the number of statesmen in the other party is limited. In making your assessment, do so from the standpoint of an American and not as a supporter of a political party.
The United States will not survive so long as we the people place politicians in positions of power. We must always place statesmen in such positions. When we are out “Setting Brushfires of Freedom”, speak only of policy and how it affects the nation. Refrain from using the name of any political party. When the other person starts to mention the party, remind them that country must come first and ask them what policy is best for our nation and why.
