A Washington D.C. city committee said we must “remove, relocate or contextualize” historical statues and memorials, including some of the city's best-known tourist attractions.
Contextualize means to place (a word, event, etc.) into a particular or appropriate context for the purpose of interpretation or analysis. The appropriate context would mean in the context that best fits the desired narrative. This is the rationale for rewriting history. “The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.” George Orwell Multiculturalism is a campaign to lower America's moral status by defining the American experience is terms of myriad expressions and their victims. By rewriting history, and by using name calling ("Racist! Sexist! Homophobe!") to inhibit debate, multiculturalists cultivate grievances, self-pity and claims to entitlements arising from victimization. George Will "Barack knows that we are going to have to make sacrifices; we are going to have to change our conversation; we're going to have to change our traditions, our history; we're going to have to move into a different place as a nation." Michele Obama when calling for the United States to be transformed. A working group tasked by Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser identified dozens of schools, parks, monuments, statues, and buildings named after historical figures that they believe represent an oppressive or racist history. Consequently they want to “contextualize” these different representations to for the purposes as stated by Orwell, Will, and Obama.
