In January of 1776, the pamphlet “COMMON SENSE” was published by Thomas Paine. This writing changed the thinking of many in the American colonies. Because of this change, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The evils of Hell and the forces of Tyranny so present at that time, are very present in the United States today.
In “Common Sense” Thomas Paine argues that because the American colonies have suffered oppression at the hands of Britain’s King and Parliament, Americans are justified in investigating and even rejecting Britain’s “usurping” power. He further argues that Britain has attacked “natural rights” that should be of concern to humanity as a whole, not just America. Paine begins with comments on the nature of government, first distinguishing between society and government. He argues that “society” is a blessing, the result of human wants and united affections. Government, on the other hand, is no better than a “necessary evil” which serves to restrain human vices. In other words, government is only needed where moral virtue fails. Because the goal of government is to secure freedom for society, the most desirable form of government is the simplest one. The English constitution, by contrast, is harmfully complex and only enshrines tyranny. The Declaration of Independence echoed much of the thoughts of Thomas Paine concerning natural rights and that the role of government must be limited. WHEN in the Course of human Events, it becomes necessary for one People to dissolve the Political Bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the Earth, the separate and equal Station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent Respect to the Opinions of Mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the Separation. We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness—-That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these Ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its Foundation on such Principles, and organizing its Powers in such Form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Our government today does not protect our natural rights, but our government believes as did Lenin that liberty is so valuable it must be rationed. Our government today is rationing those liberties endowed upon us individually by God. Our government today does not respect that government is but a necessary evil. Our government believes it is the role of government to control the lives, choices, and thoughts of all. Our government today is more restrictive and oppressive than was the government from whom the American colonies declared independence. Our government has surrendered our republic and replaced it with a democracy where the Supreme Ruler is no longer the Constitution. Our government, now being a democracy, acts as does government in all democracies, and that is as a dictator. Our government today does not honor the limitations and restrictions that we the people placed upon it. It is only COMMON SENSE that we must reverse this transformation from republic to democracy and return to republic. Lenin told us that democracy is indispensable to socialism and socialism is the gateway to communism. This is the very reason the American Left, the Democrat Party, and the RINO’s keep insisting we are a democracy and are diligently working to complete the transformation from a republic to a democracy.
