The United States was founded as an Individualist nation. Both Jamestown and Plymouth had been founded as Collectivist communities and were failing. They would not have survived had they not become Individualists. The example of Jamestown and Plymouth is based primarily on the economic differences between the two predominant philosophies.
In collectivism, it is some sort of group rather than an individual who is at the center of all social, political, and economic concerns, and issues. Those who are proponents of this ideology say that the interests and claims of groups (it may even be the state) supersede those of individuals. The mantra of the collectivist is that the individual must sacrifice their goals and achievements for the greater good. Collectivism is associated with government-controlled society such as Marxism, communism, socialism, progressivism, and the Democrat Party of today. Individualism understands that society is there, but it is ultimately made up of individuals who choose and act. Individualism has as its core the family unit. Individualism believes that private property is essential to the stability and advancement of mankind. Individualism is associated with individual liberty and rights, or a free society. The Individualist believes in individual responsibility and thus believes that their children are their responsibility. In an individualist society the values of the child often coincide with the values of the parents. The society is comprised of a wide variety of values. The Collectivist believes children are the property of the state and the values of the children must be the values of the state. Conformity to one set of values is the goal of Collectivism. The Collectivist mantra is that the values of the children can not be those of the parent or the church, but must be the values of the state. This is the battle that is being waged, not only in Virginia, but throughout the country. Who has ultimate responsibility for the child and what they are taught, the parent or the state? Who should determine what values are taught in schools? What schools should children be allowed to attend? Should the child be taken from the parent and become a ward of the state via policies such as Universal Pre-K? Marx said that the education of a child, from the time they can leave the care of their mother must be in a state institution. We are in a battle for the soul of America. We are seeing that battle being waged this very day. Will Virginia vote to once again adhere to the Individualist philosophy of children being the responsibility of the parent, or will the transformation of America to a Marxist totalitarian state be supported by electing a Collectivist who believes that the children are the property of the state, who believes that ultimately all thought must conform to the Collectivist ideology, who believes that individuals must surrender their dreams and desires to conform to the dictates of the state, who believes in total control of the state over all aspects of the individual and society.
