First, a quick history lesson. The United States of America was founded on the principle that the people would be the sovereign of our nation. This is why the Constitution begins, “We the People.” It is not a monarch, a political party, or a group of oligarchs but it is “We the People.” We were formed as a Republic and not a Democracy. One of the distinguishing features of a Republic is that the people elect individuals to represent. You might say that is also true of a Democracy. You would be only half correct because a Democracy can be a Direct Democracy or a Representative Democracy. Read “The Road to Tyranny” to learn the differences.
When the sovereign, “We the People,” are deciding an issue, it is our representatives that are discussing and voting as they represent us. They are violating their role as representatives when they decide behind closed doors and prevent us from knowing what we are doing. They are leading us down “The Road to Tyranny.” They are playing the role of sovereign and not their proper role of representative. “House Republicans meet behind closed doors to select speaker nominee” is the headline. The only reason anybody would meet behind closed doors is so that those outside those doors do not know what happened. The Republicans are defying those they represent from knowing how they are being represented. This is not placing “We the People” in the position of sovereign, but it is protecting the political careers of those who promised they would protect our sovereignty. This is telling those whose goal it is to transform the United States into a Communist Dictatorship that it is just fine to hide from the sovereign what their representatives are doing. This is being a “useful idiot” to the transformation movement. This is putting personal ambition above individual freedom and liberty. Republicans, if you are who you claim to be, that is advocates for individual liberty and freedom, open those doors, allow the sovereign into the room, be who you claim to be.
