Never forget that collectivist (Marxist, communist, socialist, progressive, Democrat – all virtually the same) demand increased poverty and lower standard of living for all. This is always the result of one of their premier calls for power. Marx said to bring about the transition to his classless society that is totally conforming and totally equal a steeply progressive income tax is critical. This has been the call of the Marxist/Progressive movement in the United Stats ever since the Income Tax Amendment was ratified in October of 1913. The original top rate was 7%. By the end of collectivist Woodrow Wilson’s first term the top rate was 67%. By the fifth anniversary of the Income tax Amendment the top rate was 77%. Collectivist FDR called for a top confiscation rate of 100%.
The candidates of the Marxist/Progressive (Democrat) party and much of their membership insist that today’s top rates be raised to what is fair and just. They never define fair and just. Only collectivist FDR defined fair and just when he said 100% of anything over $25,000 (1942 dollars) should be taxed (confiscated). What history has proven is that the higher the income tax rates go the more poverty a nation has, and the middle class dwindles. The lower the tax rates are the less poverty a nation has and a larger and more prosperous middle class in created. The reason this happens is very simple. As tax rates are lowered, innovators and entrepreneurs have more investment capital. Innovators and entrepreneurs are builders. They do not need the funds to improve their standard of living so they put the funds to work creating and building. This is what John D. Rockefeller did when he grew the need for and uses of kerosene. This is what Andrew Carnegie did when he developed a less expensive way to manufacture a stronger steel. This is what Henry Ford did when he designed the assembly line. This is what Hewlett and Packard did when they went to work in the garage and developed business machines. This is what Xerox did when they developed the copy machine. This is what Bill Gates did when he began Microsoft. This is what countless numbers of Americans have done in big cities, regional cities, and rural areas throughout the United States since 1607 when Jamestown was founded. What has happened with these innovations is that huge industries have developed. Because of the growth of the industry other small manufacturing companies have developed, other service businesses have started, small towns have developed, people have become a part of a prosperous middle class, poverty has been reduced because of the increased number of jobs, the standard of living for all increases, and what the collectivists (Marxist, communist, socialist, progressive, Democrat – all virtually the same) hate happens. The need for government and dependence on government is greatly reduced. The need to proclaim that one is a victim and only government can rectify and bring justice, is greatly reduced. Independence and the demand for freedom from the enslaving dictates of government is greatly increased. As the individual is empowered and understands it is better for themselves and all of society to be freed from an all empowered government that dictates how each individual is to live their lives and what their thoughts are to be, the power the collectivist desires is rejected. Marxist/Progressives (Democrats) believe government is the savior. Prosperity and freedom are the result of the individual being empowered. The individual is empowered when they maintain and control the natural rights given to the individual of life, liberty, and property, which includes the individuals earnings. Less government always means greater prosperity. More government always means greater poverty.
