NATO was formed in 1949 as a deterrent to Franklin Roosevelt’s good friend Joseph Stalin, the USSR, and communism in Europe. It was Franklin Roosevelt’s policies and accommodations to Joseph Stalin that allowed the growth of communism in Eastern Europe.
Roosevelt is gone. Stalin is gone. The USSR is gone. Eastern Europe is less communistic today than is the Untied States. Yet NATO persists with the United States paying its costs. It is Biden’s use of NATO that has brought on the current war between Ukraine and Russia. Putin’s position was that Ukraine should be a buffer between Russia and NATO. This had been the position for twenty-five years. Putin invaded Ukraine when Biden begged him to invade. It was Biden who wanted the war. The only reasonable reason Biden wanted the war was to protect him and his son from being discovered to be the scoundrel’s reasonable people already knew they were and are. What we have learned about Russia is that they are not a serious military threat to anybody. Its military forces have performed miserably in Ukraine. It has been forced to rely on Iran for weapons. Russia’s military spending is a fraction of the collective defense budgets of Europe’s NATO members. The European Union’s GDP is more than eight times Russia’s, and the EU’s per capita GDP is more than double Russia’s corresponding figure. If the European Countries want to remain in a military alliance, and that makes sense, then NATO should remain. However, the dangers to the United States seem to far outweigh any advantages. It is time for the United States to have a serious discussion about us withdrawing from this military alliance.
