Public sector unions are a relatively new phenomenon. In was in 1959 that Wisconsin became the first state to allow them. By the 1960s and 1970s public-sector unions expanded rapidly to cover teachers, clerks, firemen, police, prison guards and others. The deep state is a result of unionization. It is virtually impossible to fire public sector employees regardless of their performance. The Teacher Unions bear most of the responsibility for the school lockdowns, for the rapid decline in reading and math scores, and for turning the public schools into indoctrination centers.
Public sector unions have been good for the Democrat party and their efforts to transform the United States into a communist nation. The public sector unions are major donors to the Democrat party. This despite some of the public employees strongly opposing the communist policies of the Democrat party. The Supreme Court long held that requiring nonunion members to pay the full amount of union dues would violate their right of free expression, forcing them to subsidize a union's political activities whether they agree with its goals or not. But in 1977, the Court said nonunion employees could be required to pay a portion of union dues, known as agency fees, to cover the cost of collective bargaining and prevent "free riders" — workers who get the benefits of a union contract without paying for it. This ruling was overturned when the court said that States and public-sector unions may no longer extract agency fees from non consenting employees. And that brings us to Florida which just made Senate Bill 256 a law. It forbids most unions representing government employees from having dues deducted directly from workers’ paychecks. It also requires that affected unions maintain at least 60% membership in their bargaining units, or else they could face decertification and lose their contracts. Unions will now have to prove their worth to the public sector employee. The union will also have to convince the public sector employee that contributing to candidates that support communism is in their best interest. Thank you Florida. When will the rest of the states follow.
