The Kremlin says it’s confident that Russian President Vladimir Putin will win the 2024 presidential election if he decides to run for another term in office. The democratic election for a president of Russia has been set for March 17.
Under Putin’s tenure, opposition parties have been dismantled, banned and outlawed, with prominent Putin critics and opponents, such as opposition leader Alexei Navalny, harassed and imprisoned. The Russian government censures speech and controls the press. The Kremlin insists Russia remains a politically plural democracy, saying that “in Russia there are politicians with different views and positions.” In the 2016 election there had been multiple reports of ballot boxes being stuffed with votes – sometimes caught on the electoral commission’s own CCTV cameras. One video, from the Kemerovo region, shows a black-shirted election official awkwardly standing in front of a ballot box as a hand appears from behind a Russian flag and repeatedly stuffs papers inside. In another, two women are heard laughing as they stuff a ballot box in what appears to be a crude attempt to falsify results. Russia’s election commission says any fraudulent votes have been annulled. But critics say thousands of incidents, including ballot stuffing and forced voting, appear to have been ignored. One major concern for observers was the fact that the election was extended over three full days, ostensibly to allow voters to socially distance during the Covid-19 pandemic. Critics say this has made monitoring the vote far more difficult. A system of electronic voting has also been rolled out in several regions, allowing people to cast their ballots online. Even President Putin himself – in quarantine after members of his inner circle tested positive for coronavirus – was shown voting this way. United States Democracy could be substituted for Russian Democracy. Policial opponents of the left in the United States have been and are being arrested and jailed. The leader of the opposition has been indicted and faces jail time. The press does what the left wants. Censorship is now the rule as opposed to the exception. Somehow, any information that contradicts the left is misinformation or disinformation. Blatant ballot box stuffing caught on tape, fraudulent counting, electronic voting, and manipulation of the final vote count are accepted as being normal in both of these Democracies. These are some of the reasons our founders unanimously rejected democracy and made us a republic. In a republic the rights of the minorities must be respected even when those rights allow open contradiction to the left. Fair and transparent elections must be held. Rule of law must exist as opposed to the arbitrary law necessary for democracy. Yes, the left idolizes the Russian democracy and is emulating their manner of maintaining power and control. It is the left that insists on transforming our republic to a democracy where political opponents can be indicted, tried, and jailed, where censorship outlaws opposing views, and where elections are determined by vote counters and not legal voters.
