In the United States we vote for those who are to represent us. We vote directly for president, but through the electoral college. We vote directly for our senators within each state, we vote for our representatives directly within districts. Our state elections are similar, as are our local elections. The amount of attention garnered is in that same order, national elections get the most attention, state elections are next, and local elections receive extraordinarily little attention.
Fewer than one in five eligible residents in Los Angeles vote in mayoral elections. In New York City, that figure falls to less than 14 percent. In fact, in 15 of the 30 most populous cities in the U.S., voter turnout in mayoral elections is less than 20 percent. In Minneapolis and St. Paul, the cities in the national spotlight, both had under 35% of the voter’s vote in the last election. A very small percentage of the American population is participating in our city’s elections. "Minneapolis has been under Democratic control since 1978. Chicago has been under Democratic control for 89 years. Philadelphia has had Democratic mayors for 68 years. Six of the last seven Atlanta, Ga., mayoral administrations were led by Democratic mayors. Los Angeles county has been in the Democrat column since 1988 while San Francisco has been since 1960. The story is consistent in so many of the cities in America. It is the mayors and city councils that determine policies for the cities including who runs the police departments. We know that Mayor De Blasio was elected with less than 8.5% of the people living in New York City voting for him. De Blasio has not changed. He has never been intelligent. He has always been a devoted Marxist and has not been quiet about it. He had already done much damage to the city of New York, and yet he was elected to serve another by just a handful of people. You know where I am going with this train of thought. We the people have allowed what is happening to happen. Unless we Freedom Loving Americans take our local elections seriously nothing will change. The solution the far left always offers is more money and more assistance with less individual responsibility. This has always failed to promote a prosperous and free society. This formula has always worked to bring about a lawless and impoverished population that eventually begs to become slaves to the state. This is what we are seeing today. Thomas Jefferson said, “Freedom Is Lost Gradually from An Uninterested, Uninformed and Unresponsive People.” This is as true on the local level as it is on the state and national level. To remain free we must become interested, informed, and responsive on the local level as well. The choice is ours.
